Gales Ferry Free Public Library - Hurlbutt Road

The Gales Ferry Free Public Library was officially opened in 1921 with 1789 books.  A new library was built in 1974.  Both libraries were built with volunteer labor.

Ledyard Parks and Recreation and Board of Education

The Ledyard Parks and Recreation Commission and the Ledyard Board of Education worked in cooperation to build their office space in 1991 at 4 Blonder’s Boulevard off Colonel Ledyard Highway in Ledyard.

Latham A Brown House of 1875 - Riverside Place

The Latham A Brown house is now owned by Yale University and is part of their training facility for rowing races on the Thames River.  In 1878 the Yale Harvard Regatta moved to the area and Yale used this home of Latham Brown for the first time.  The race remains the oldest collegiate event in the nation and is held each year in June.

Former Methodist Church Parsonage - 8 Hurlbutt Road

Built in 1928, this building served as the parsonage of the Gales Ferry Methodist Church which stood next door.  Both the church and the parsonage moved in 1972, after the membership voted to build new facilities.  It currently is used as the office of RE/MAX Realty Group.

Gales Ferry Elementary School - Route 12

Gales Ferry Elementary School is Ledyard’s newest school building, housing approximately 300 students, kindergarten through second grade.  Designed by Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc, this school project was a winner in the 2002 NSSEA Architectural Awards Contest.

“The Ledyard Economic Development Commission has completed installation of nine Ledyard and Gales Ferry signs near roads leading into Town Centers. To capture the theme that Ledyard is a "Town for All Seasons," a tree with the four seasons of foliage is depicted. A stone wall, which is typical of the Ledyard and Gales Ferry landscape, has also been incorporated into the design of the sign. The tree and stonewall have been colorfully sandblasted on a green background; all lettering is in gold leaf. Fabrication of the signs were made possible by donations from the Dime Savings Bank, Holdridge Farm Nursery, Citizen's Bank, the Mystic Pony Club, Andersen Oil, Dow Chemical, McGrattan/Walsh Family, and Lorenz Family -- representing the solid commitment of local businesses and groups to the Town.”  ... from the town of Ledyard website.

The Elder Park House 1755 - Whalehead Road

This home sits prominently on the corner of Sandy Hollow and Whalehead Road. Much of the research on historic homes in Ledyard can be found in the publications of the Ledyard Historic District Commission. Their research indicates this home was at one time used as a hunting lodge as part of the 400 acre Sandy Hollow Game Preserve. 

Cape Code of 1843 - Riverside Place

This Gales Fery Village home was originally a Cape Cod style built by sea captain Abel Bolles in 1843.  Renovations including the addition of the two dormers were made in the early 1900’s. 

The Thames River - Bluff Road

Gales Ferry offers plenty of Thames River views.  Some of the prettiest views are along Bluff Road in Gales Ferry Village.

Smith Pond - Woodland Lane

Smith Pond is home to geese, ducks and swan families.  This view is from a back yard on Woodland Lane.
