I’m sure everyone that lives in town has shopped at Holdridge’s at one time or another. The official name for this long standing business is Holdridge Home and Garden Showplace. Around here, it is known as just Holdridge’s. The store celebrated its 100th anniversary this year which puts them in a pretty elite class in Eastern CT.
I’d guess most folks shop at Holdridge’s for nursery stock and garden supplies. Hopefully by now, people have discovered they also have a well stocked True Garden Hardware store. But I wonder how many think of Holdridge’s when it is time to buy a gift or pick up a card?
This Christmas I decided to avoid the malls and do more of my shopping locally. I bought several of my gifts at Holdridge’s, including this fabulous little purse for my sister pictured below. She liked it so much she wore it for Christmas Dinner in Florida where she is staying for the winter.
I also bought a wonderfully soft knitted scarf, a pair of earrings and a few Vera Bradley items as gifts. Besides feeling good about shopping locally, it was really nice to find a parking space without a hassle and to have a pleasant staff waiting on me. Many of the people that work at Holdridge’s are our neighbors, which is another good reason to shop local.
We spend a lot of time in Ledyard talking about what we need to do to bring new business into town. Let’s be sure to support the shops and businesses we do have to keep them successful.
Let’s shop local.

Holdridge's is a great place to go. I remember going there looking for"s" hooks I didn't even know what they were-but a kind gentleman clerk was more than willing to help. It is a shame we don't think of them 1st before we head for the mall.

I'm getting better at thinking local first especially since I really dislike the mall!

I always think to myself - "will Holdridges have it" before I head somewhere else. Usually, the answer is yes. As a matter of fact, we used them for our flowers when we got married a few years ago and tried to get everything as local as we could. Felicias did the cake. We bought wine from Magule Sierra for gift baskets that we provided all our guests that stayed at our venue, The Stonecroft Inn. Our rehearsal dinner was at Cows and Cones and since we had an afternoon wedding, we got pizza from Valentinos that night. We kept it a pretty local wedding! :)

I'd call that a Ledyard wedding for sure!
