Bites of LedyardLittle Bites of Ledyard is a compilation of Ledyard news, events and items of interest in the Ledyard Community. Not enough for a blog post but just a bite with direct links to more information!  This week I have news about Ledyard Trash Pickup, the Ledyard Farmers Market, Ledyard Libraries and the Ledyard Fair.

Ledyard Trash Talk from the Public Works Director – I posted this message from the Ledyard Public Works Director on the Ledyard Community Forum on Facebook. Many people were surprised about the information about plastic bags and the pizza boxes.   “By way of an important reminder, plastic bags are NOT acceptable for recycling and should NOT be placed in the blue cart. This has been observed to be a widespread issue. If it is your practice to collect acceptable recyclables in plastic bags, they must be emptied from the bags into the blue cart and the bags reused or disposed of as trash. Also, soiled paper and cardboard, such as greasy pizza boxes, are not acceptable as recyclable. Any portion of such items that is soiled must be disposed of as trash (e.g., the clean portion of pizza boxes may be separated from the soiled portion and placed in the blue cart with the soiled portion going in the trash cart).”

Due to the Ledyard Fair taking place on the Fairgrounds, the Ledyard Farmers Market will be on the grassy area between the Bill Library and the Ledyard Congregational Church. Little Bites of Ledyard is my gathering place for events, news items and even an occasional opinion about anything Ledyard.

Cub scouts is open to all boys in grades 1-5. If you think you might be interested or have questions, stop by this informal informational session beginning at 6:00PM on the evening of September 16th at both Gallup Hill School and Ledyard Center School. . Stay for a minute or until the end. There will be a short activity the kids can do while the adults chat. Boys in grades 6-12 can join Boy Scouts.

The 70th running of the Ledyard Fair has come and gone. Kudo’s to the volunteers who work tirelessly year round to ensure a safe and fun environment. I hope next year the committee will reconsider their decision to put some community groups in isolated locations.  Seeing Henna Tattoos and a Tarot Card Reader in two of the best locations on the Fair Grounds was a little discouraging and certainly didn’t demonstrate what the Town of Ledyard offers.

The Ledyard Fair 2015

2-LF (Large)The Ledyard Fair is just around the corner so I thought it would be a good day to share some photos from the past few years. This year, the Ledyard Fair will be held on September 11, 12 and 13.  Their new and improved website will give you all the good scoop. These photos are a combination of mine and the good folks of the Ledyard Community Forum on Facebook.

P.S. You'll find me on Friday night selling corn dogs and root beer floats at the Ledyard Republican Committee Booth.

Just a reminder - On September 12th, Merry Cassabria and I along with Putnam Bank will be co-sponsoring a Community Shred Day.  Bring up to 4 boxes FREE between 9-12PM at Putnam Bank at 2 Chapman Lane.

I attended the Gypsy Moth seminar with Dr. Kilby Stafford, Chief Entomologist of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station who shared information on the potential for gypsy moth infestation in 2016 in Ledyard and what steps residents can take to minimize the impact. I didn’t come away feeling great about our prospects.  The main thing you can do is pray for a wet spring so the fungus that kills them can have the opportunity to grow. For more information, view the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station Fact Sheet.

Thoughts on the Ledyard Fair 2014

2014 Ledyard FairThe Ledyard Community Forum on Facebook is filled with wonderful photos from the Ledyard Fair. There are also many comments posted of what people love about the fair – the sense of community, the good food , the music and the many events. The kids of course, love the rides.  Members also posted what they didn’t like so much – mostly the cost but also the shortage and sometimes confusing information.

I was privileged to be a judge for the Miss Ledyard Fair Pageant again this year and meeting those impressive young ladies is always a real treat. But my favorite part of the fair is seeing and chatting with friends and neighbors. As far as the down side, I agree with those that found solid current information to be lacking.

I thought the comments on the forum were respectful and genuine.  I hope people will share those comments with the Ledyard Fair Association, a group of volunteers who work tirelessly year round. They meet the third Tuesday of every month in the Morgan Barn on the Fairgrounds at 7 pm. I also hope the Association will welcome suggestions and new ideas.
