The Gales Ferry Cemetery Association is in need of volunteers May 14 at 10am to help clean up the historical Gales Ferry Cemetery. Please bring your own rakes,gloves,and leave bags. Contact Jenna Miller at 860-464-2152 or jklix@yahoo.com if you can help!

Italian cuisine and New York style pizza will be on the menu when Florentine’s opens at the former Raya’s location in Gales Ferry.  The grand opening is planned for May 16th.  The new restaurant,  will be owned by Osias Florence, a Norwich native and head chef at the Bella Florence restautant on Route 32.  

The Ledyard Center Farmers Market will open on Wednesday, June 1, from 4-7 p.m., and will be open every Wednesday until Sept. 7. Some new and exciting items will be offered this year, as well as organic eggs, vegetables, baked goods, jellies, jams, maple syrup, fresh fish and Connecticut-made crafts. Ask about the Loyal Customer discount.

The Ledyard Animal Shelter and Dog Scout Troop 188 is holding a Canine Wellness Fair on June 5th from 10am to 2pm.  Bring your pets!  K9 demos, basket raffle and $5 rabies vaccinations.

The Ledyard Historical Society will have a “Remembering Vality” display at this year’s Ledyard Fair. They are requesting you to submit your memories to events@ledyardhistory.org. More info on Ledyard history can be found at the Ledyard Historical Society website.

For those voting in the primary on August 10th,  Gales Ferry voters (District 2) will be voting at the Ledyard Middle School located directly behind the Juliet Long School on Route 12. This is a temporary situation as JWL is undergoing construction during the summer months.

The Ledyard High School Class of 2010 will graduate Wednesday evening, June 23rd at 6PM.

Just in time for the best tastes of summer, the Town of Ledyard has launched www.LedyardFresh.com , a website to promote local farms.

Speaking of farm fresh, the Ledyard Farmer’s market will re-open June 2nd from 4-7PM at its new location at the Ledyard Fair Ground’s.

The Atlantic Tropical Storm Season officially begins June 1.  Hurricane Gloria in 1985 and Hurricane Bob in 1991 were the last major storms to effect this area. I keep thinking that we are way overdue for another big one.

The Backus Health Center has moved! Dr. Russo's office is now located in the Ledyard Professional Building, next to Ledyard Town Hall.

State Representative Tom Reynolds and State Senator Edith Prague have sent a letter to the US Postal Service District Manager in Hartford expressing concern and requesting an update on the reopening of the Gales Ferry Post Office.

The Library Commission will be reporting to the Ledyard Town Council on the Future of Library Services on Wednesday, January 27th at 7:30 in the Council Chambers.

Connecticut Magazine name Ledyard one of the top 10 towns in Connecticut in 2009 in the 10,000 - 15,000 population category. The selection criteria? Education, crime, local economy, cost and leisure.

The Bill Library in Ledyard holds book discussions on Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm. They have created a book mark listing all the books they plan to discuss in 2010. Pick up your laminated copy the next time you are in the library and start reading!

Reservations are now being accepted for Spring and Summer parties and picnics at Colonel Ledyard Park Pavillion and the Jane Perry Pavillion at Highlands Lake. Stop by the Recreation Department to reserve your date.

The Ledyard Garden Club is an educational, non-profit organization comprised of members dedicated to gardening, betterment and beatification of the community. They meet on the 1st Monday of the month (except July and August) at 7PM at the Ledyard Senior Center.  They do good work!  For more details call Donna 860-464-5584.
