Little Bites of Ledyard

Bites of LedyardFrom Public Works Director Steven Masalin:  “Public Works personnel have observed and have received complaints regarding leaves being blown or raked into roadways by property owners or hired landscape companies. This is a violation of Ordinance #75 that addresses unauthorized obstructions placed in the Town right-of-ways. Leaves present a particular problem for drainage. Residents are reminded to refrain from such activity and to inform anyone hired for leaf removal of this prohibition. Leaves need to be disposed of at appropriate locations. If leaves from your property have been deposited in an adjacent road frontage area, please remove them or have them removed. Residents may take leaves to the Transfer Station for free disposal.”

You can view a list of all Ledyard Ordinances on the Town of Ledyard Website.

Bites of LedyardLittle Bites of Ledyard is a compilation of Ledyard news, events and items of interest in the Ledyard Community. Not enough for a blog post but just a bite with direct links to more information!  This week I have news about the Ledyard Regional Visiting Nurse Agency, the next Ledyard Town Council Meeting, Joining Night for the Ledyard Cub Scouts and Wednesday’s Farmers Market

Healthcare today is rapidly changing and Ledyard Regional Visiting Nurse Agency is changing with it. Many Ledyard residents don’t know about the Town Nurses or that they make home visits. The only thing you have to do is ask for your Ledyard nurses from your doctor or hospital/nursing home discharge planner. If you don’t, due to the competitiveness that now exists in healthcare, another agency will be sent to your home. Here is a testimonial:

“Excellent, excellent care. Nikki, Brenda and Krista exceeded all expectations. My only regret is that I did not take the time to do this earlier. Ledyard VNA provides a much needed service and are to be commended. I thank them for all they do.” -  Claire Murphy - Ledyard

Bites of LedyardLittle Bites of Ledyard is a compilation of Ledyard news, events and items of interest in the Ledyard Community. Not enough for a blog post but just a bite with direct links to more information!  This week I have news about Ledyard Trash Pickup, the Ledyard Farmers Market, Ledyard Libraries and the Ledyard Fair.

Ledyard Trash Talk from the Public Works Director – I posted this message from the Ledyard Public Works Director on the Ledyard Community Forum on Facebook. Many people were surprised about the information about plastic bags and the pizza boxes.   “By way of an important reminder, plastic bags are NOT acceptable for recycling and should NOT be placed in the blue cart. This has been observed to be a widespread issue. If it is your practice to collect acceptable recyclables in plastic bags, they must be emptied from the bags into the blue cart and the bags reused or disposed of as trash. Also, soiled paper and cardboard, such as greasy pizza boxes, are not acceptable as recyclable. Any portion of such items that is soiled must be disposed of as trash (e.g., the clean portion of pizza boxes may be separated from the soiled portion and placed in the blue cart with the soiled portion going in the trash cart).”

Due to the Ledyard Fair taking place on the Fairgrounds, the Ledyard Farmers Market will be on the grassy area between the Bill Library and the Ledyard Congregational Church. From the Office of Ledyard Mayor Mike Finkelstein:  This week, representatives of Eversource met with Ledyard Officials to advise them of upcoming work on the Stoddard’s Warf section of RT 214. It was explained that the purpose of this work is to be proactive in their attempt to reduce power outages and provide a redundancy to some of the Town’s electrical circuits. Starting in late June, Eversource will undertake selective tree trimming between RT 12 and Avery Hill Rd. This is being done to clear the way for the installation of new utility poles in that same area. The new poles will replace existing ones, and will have new “spacer cable”, which is more resilient than the current power lines. Eversource plans to have this work completed by the end of September.

The Ledyard Community Forum on Facebook turns 5 this month. An article in today’s New London Day speaks of a number of town groups and how they are run.  The reporter describes me as running a tight ship. I’ve watched a number of area groups implode so while I’ve taken some criticism for being pretty rigid, the Ledyard forum still exists after 5 years. The good news about Facebook is that if you don’t like the way a group is run, you can create your own.

Ledyard Budget season is over and the important issues discussed are now forgotten.  As in most years, many people engage too late to make a difference. I answered many questions on Facebook about the budget and I realized that many residents, even those deeply involved do not understand how the Town Charter affects the budget process. So before the next season begins how about a review of the Ledyard Town Charter? Pay particular attention to Chapter Seven.  Download Ledyard Town Charter.

Speaking of the budget, a new town committee has been formed called “Committee to Transform the Budget Process”.  The committee will reexamine a number of issues including the process and format of the budget, shared services, funding sources and mandates. If you are interested in learning more about the Ledyard budget process you may want to attend the committee meetings. The next meeting is June 23rd at 5:00PM in the Ledyard Town Hall Annex. Meetings will continue every other Thursday until the committee reports to the Town Council in October.
